WHAT'S NEW?
The question of leadership has been occupying much of my time. My work with clients across sectors over the past 12 months or so has caused me to reflect on this complex topic.
International Development
In recent times I have been particularly pleased to have the opportunity to work with groups of executive leaders from the Asia Pacific (including Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Phillipines and Mongolia) sharing experiences and ideas about public policy, governance, mentoring, stakeholder engagement and high performing teams. It is exciting to meet the highly intelligent leaders from think through these countries and to talk through concepts of leadership with them. As always it has been a wonderful two way learning opportunity.
Collaboration - an important leadership skill
In 2016 I enjoyed being a guest speaker at learning groups run by Jeff Whalan Learning Groups. Of particular interest to me is the importance of collaboration for public service leaders of today. Collaboration has been essential to the way that I have worked in my leadership roles as I believe that working cross sectors is critical for achieving good social and cultural outcomes. I am particularly intrigued by the concept of 'tri-sector athletes' that Jeff Whalan has highlighted for learning group participants. It is a term used by Kennedy School professor Joseph Nye to describe people who can bridge different cultures of government, business and NGOs.
Cultural leadership
Congratulations to Wesley Enoch on his appointment as Director of the Sydney Festival. Wesley Enoch has been Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company for the past five years. He is a Nunuccal Nuugi man from Stradbroke Island was wrote a platform paper about cultural leadership. In the epilogue Wesley speculates that "Cultural leaderships happens best when artists step up and wrestle with the future, when we use our creative and imaginative powers to create alternate worlds that challenge and excite." Boards and Committees
I have taken up the role of Chair of Community Plus+, an organisation that services inner south side communities in Brisbane from West End, through Annerley and Yeronga.
QShelter Working Together Conference 2015: Townsville Tuesday 17 February 2015 and Brisbane Thursday 19 February 2015. I was excited to join Veronica Laverick from the Gladstone Regional Council, Dushy Thangiah, Pam Bourke and Gina Pearson to discuss the question of women leaders in community housing and homeless with a particular emphasis on vision, valour and nurturing the next generation.
Women in Local Government Queensland Leadership Summit - Brisbane 21 October 2014
I was very pleased to facilitate the Women in Local Government Queensland Leadership Summit in Brisbane on 21 October 2014. There were a range of excellent speakers from local governments across Queensland bringing fresh insights into what makes leadership successful.
